white wedding?

so ms. fledman and I are beginning the dress search in boston this friday. now I'm wondering what to look for in a dress and what is the amount I can expect to spend on a nice, not tacky, non-super shiny dress.

ladies feel free to do some research on dresses and send pics to me on my email - I can print them and bring them along.

concepts?

    crucial details:
    day or evening?
    cathedral, church, or other?

i know another girl in the wedding dress market now. here's a great shopping concept. she's found a "base model" she likes ($700) but has a number of alterations she'd like (more shoulder coverage, more bodice trim, longer train, etc.). the bridal shop is sending requested changes to the maker who will send sketches of the planned dress before making. of course, the projected changes will be another ($700-$1000). i think sketches are v. haute and you should have them. i'll try to find out which designer is doing this.

btw, she's been told the making of the dress takes 9 months. coincidence?

    reception starting at 4:00

no crazy train - no crazy veil.

    I want some arm coverage.

is this one of those times you don't acknowledge your own pun, even though it's funny?

One of the most important things about a wedding dress is how it looks from the back-- as the majority of the time that people will be staring at you and only you (during the wedding), they will be looking the back, rather than the front. For that reason, one of my friend's mothers insists that a wedding dress must have "back interest"-- it doesn't need to be over the top in the back, but there needs to be some detailing, however subtle, from behind.

Here are two dresses I found when quickly pursuing Nordstrom's web-page... both have the "arm coverage" that you are seeking, plus "back interest". I think something along either of these lines would be really lovely.

I never would have thought of that back interest thing which is SO true. I did find a loved on the target "club wedd" page but I cannot for the life of me figure out who made it - I'm going to print it out and bring it on friday dress shopping - I'll be able to show the stores stuff I gereally like to give them ideas of what to show me.

and conveniently this dress is shown from the back and really cool.

as for the pun - funny you should mention it.

question - if I were to find a dress I really loved but it were really expensive - is it worth investigating have it "remade" by local dressmaker or is that WAY too risky?

i think if you were the sort of lady who was regularly having dresses made and therefore had a good dressmaker, then it would be safe. weren't those the days when you didn't need to shop, just visit the dressmaker. then the cobbler.

here's a dress shopping development. i am enraged (yes, enraged) that many bridal shops will not allow you to see "the rack". you have to describe what you're looking for and then trust that they'll wheel it out. of course the most expensive ones come first. the process would be so much shorter if you could just consult the full stock yourself.

relatedly, it also is infuriating that many places don't let you photograph the dress. i see some vague point about stealing the design. but you will try on so many that you need the documentation of which dress was which and where it was.

The secrecy is insane! But maybe nkb can do some covert ops with her cellphone camera. Or she'll justy have to put that photographic memory of hers to good use.

Friday should be a VERY lady day of low-pressure shopping and lunch. And I presume for deeply engrained reasons of cultural superstition no one will think for a moment that I'm the groom. Of course they will undoubtedly make some other assumptions about me...
