I want...

So I want to know the protocol about registering for gifts. Does one put on the list expensive dream gifts like a $300 juicer? Is it ok to use a couple really high end expensive places if you also use some more accessible places as well?

And I think one needs to have some inexpensive stuff for those without tons of cash, but how expensive can your stuff be at the upper level? Are there things that are inappropriate to choose - can you have things like exercise equipment or simply stuff for your kitchen?

I understand that panero has a nice situation going on - BUT I just don't want to seem too pretentious. But being a lady means one must be pretentious at a certain level.

here's my two cents on registries. maybe it's just that my fam is relatively low brow, but if you put the $300 juicer on the list some practical aunt will simply read it as "she want's a juicer" and you'll get the $45 one from sears. it's unavoidable.

register for those of us who understand the use and value of a registry. even expensive gifts might be obtained by two or more ladies clubbing together.

for the old school pov, you and john have already set up a household. of course you want cool new stuff, but it's not that you're in dire need of dishes or towels etc. to set up housekeeping. isn't that original the function of a registry? so the conservative view might be that too much registry would be seen as greedy or solicitous.

Given that we live in a world where no one of our generation actually NEEDS fancy china and crystal, I always assumed that the registry was more a list of domestic dreams that can't offend and have a chance of being fulfilled. I can't imagine anyone thinking it rude to register for really expensive stuff so long as there are reasonable options too...
